A Sweet-Sounding Place

A baby, cradled in mud beside a creek in South Carolina, is picked up by runaway slaves and taken north to freedom. Named Moses, he is raised in Boston by a man he calls his uncle, but Moses wants to go back down south and find his real family. The opportunity comes when his uncle enlists in the 54th Massachusetts Infantry. With only an old gold coin to help him, Moses searches from Boston to Fort Wagner, the Sea Islands, and the swamps and forests of northern Florida and southern Georgia. What he finds are young runaway slaves and a Black Seminole girl – contraband – which the 54th takes along with them. Moses names them, cares for them, and teaches them.

On the brink of discovery at a sweet–sounding place called Honey Hill, he must choose between finding his family and his obligations as a soldier.
